For this experiment Windows is a hands down
winner. It is easy to install Ethereal on
a Windows machine because you can download an
installer. With
Linux it can be very difficult because of the
dependencies involved. You can feel like a cat
chasing its tail. Actually, I had one very
easy install from the source code, but the
last time I did it, disaster!
For Linux try installing Ethereal by adding the package
(Yast for SuSE), but be aware that you really
do need to keep Ethereal up to date for two
reasons. Obviously, security is an issue, but
in a project that I am currently working on,
I have been impressed with the continual
improvement in this product. Note that 0.10.10
was released on March 11, 2005, while 0.10.11
came out on May 10 of the same year.
That is not atypical so you need to watch for new releases.
