Remote Access - VS Code

The Computer Science and Data Science departments offers a method for utilizing Linux and VS Code remotely with your CS Linux filesystem access. Please read the following FAQ completely, and let Chris Wieringa, CS Lab Manager, cwieri39@calvin.edu know if you have further questions.

Coder

The Coder service is available for your use. Within the Coder service, you have a few methods to remotely code:

  1. VS Code Desktop - This allows you to connect to your local copy of VS Code on your own computer. The "Coder" extension will be installed in your VS Code instance, and a remote connection will be made to Calvin CS's Coder service. Note that after connecting you will want to open your home directory, found at /home/ where is your Calvin issued username. Ex: /home/jcalvin
  2. VS Code Web - This allows you to remotely develop in a web browser using VS Code Web. No installation of VS Code is required on your local machine. Note that after connecting you will want to open your home directory, found at /home/ where is your Calvin issued username. Ex: /home/jcalvin
  3. Linux Desktop - This allows you to have a remote Linux desktop in a web browser. This Linux desktop has all required utilities for common classwork. Note that there is no audio available on the desktop, and copy and paste functionality may or may not work.
  4. JupyterLab - This runs a Jupyter instance on your remote Linux account. You will be able to do Python programming directly within Jupyter.
  5. Terminal - This opens a Linux terminal for your use in your remote Linux account.
