3. Installing Eclipse

The third step is to install Eclipse. If you already have Eclipse on your system, make sure it is the latest version; then proceed directly to installing CDT.
  1. Using your favorite browser, navigate to the the Eclipse website. There, click the Downloads tab:
  2. Find and click the link to download the current version of Eclipse for Windows:
  3. The next page lets you select the server from which to download Eclipse. If you are on-campus at Calvin, scroll down (if necessary) and select mirror.calvin.edu; otherwise, select the server that is geographically nearest to you.
  4. A dialog will appear, asking what you want to do with the download. Make certain that the "Save to disk" radio button is selected; then click the OK button:
  5. A dialog will appear, asking where you want to save the download. If necessary, navigate to your Desktop; then click the Save button:
  6. When the download has finished, there will be a .ZIP file on your desktop, containing the Eclipse download. Double-click this file. Windows will open the file, showing its contents -- a folder named eclipse. Select this folder; then click the "Extract all files" link in the left column:
  7. The Extraction Wizard will start. Click its Next button.
  8. The wizard will display a dialog box asking where to save the extracted files. If necessary, browse to your Desktop; then click theNext button.
  9. The wizard will extract the files to a folder on your Desktop. When it has finished, click the Finish button:
  10. The wizard will open the folder on your Desktop, revealing its contents -- a folder named eclipse:
  11. Double-click My Computer to open a new window. In that window, double-click C:, and if necessary, scroll down so that you can see the Program Files folder. Position this window so that you can see both it and the folder containing eclipse. Then drag the eclipse folder onto C:\Program Files.
  12. Double-click the Program Files folder; you should see the eclipse folder you just dragged in. Double-click the eclipse folder to reveal its contents. Right-click on eclipse.exe, and choose Create Shortcut from the menu that appears:
  13. Drag the shortcut to your Desktop, or the Taskbar, or wherever you prefer, so that you can launch Eclipse conveniently.
  14. Double-click this shortcut. You should see the Eclipse splash screen as it launches. (If you do not, double-check that you have Java installed on your system. Most Windows XP systems come with Java preinstalled; if yours does not, you will have to download the latest version from Sun and install it. Then try again)
  15. Congratulations! You've just installed Eclipse!
