Chapter 15 Student Notes
15.1 15.2 15.3
Chapter 15 requires a "Dedicated Intranet Lab". The failure of the "dot coms" carried with it a silver lining for educational institutions in the presence of a lot of inexpensive, used hardware. Calvin was able to purchase eight Cisco 1605R routers with version 12.0(5T) of their operating system for $5400. One needs to be very careful when purchasing routers because many of them do not have the interfaces that allow the kinds of connections contemplated in these experiments. (I must admit to coming very close to what would have been a disastrous purchase. Check with your network people to be sure.) The 1605R is ideal because it has two ethernet interfaces.

We purchased eight 5 port switches at the local Best Buy. Switches allow the hosts to be connected according to the various diagrams in this chapter. Our department's lab manager/sys admin, Gary Draving, and I were able to set up an intranet in a remarkably short time. We grouped 25 LINUX boxes into 8 workgroups each with its own router and switch. The usual configuration has each router connected to a central switch. We assigned ip addresses according to a simple scheme. Host n in subnet m was given the address 10.2.m.n. The ethernet 0 interface on each router was given the address 10.2.m.30, while ethernet 1 received 10.2.m.5. This turned out to be a felicitous choice when we tackled Experiment 17.4.

Simplified directions for some of the tasks involved in the experiments in this chapter may be found on the notes in the student section.
