Chapter 14
This chapter forms an introduction to Part IV: Configuration
Experiments In A Dedicated Intranet Lab. Notice
the words, "A Completely Dedicated Intranet".
Many schools do not have such facilities, in fact, although Calvin
has a systems lab with routers, switches, and hubs, it is
not "completely dedicated" because it must be shared by
different courses with different needs. It of often takes a
great deal of time to set up and take down experimental
configurations, and you will sometimes see signs on machines
urging other students to leave them alone.
As part of an NSF Grant with Professors Fei and Griffioen of
the University of Kentucky, we explored ways in which many of
the experiments in Part IV could be carried out in an emulab
environment.
As I have gone through this part of Professor Comer's book,
I have found some experiments that are very amenable to an
Emulab solution, some that (at the present time) do not seem
so amenable, and at least one that is harder in an Emulab
environment but whose challenges have a high payoff in what
can be learned. I have prepared separate notes for the
experiments that I have been able to do on the Calvin Emulab.
I have included material on the Gateway Project in Chapter 8
even though it is somewhat out of place. I have also included
a routing experiment of my own design. Emulab normally sets
up routes for you, but it is possible to override that
feature.
