We will follow the outline of this text, at the rate of about one chapter per week.

Weekly Schedule:

Monday:                                        Class lecture         10:30 am - 11:20 am in SB 382

Wednesday and Friday:             Lab time                 10:30 am - 11:20 am in SB 372

The lab exercises are due by 11:59 pm on Friday of the week they are assigned and the project exercises are due by 11:59 pm on Monday following the week they are assigned.

What to turn in:

Using Knightvision, attach and submit the assignment files to the class grader by 11:59 pm on the due date.  Don’t forget to attach all of the required files using the [Browse] and [Add Another File] buttons and make sure the ‘Comments’ section of the Knightvision assignment submission screen states “IS-171X  Lab 1 – your name”, where X is your class section letter.

Knightvision will only allow you to attach and submit your files one time for each assignment.  If for some reason you need to re-submit all of your files again for a given assignment, you must send an e-mail to the class grader (jcv2@calvin.edu) or your instructor (ff22@calvin.edu) requesting that the lock be cleared on your previously submitted assignment (e.g., Lab 1).

The class grader will grade each lab and project and notify you of any point reductions by replying to your original Knightvision assignment submission.  Your original dated Knightvision assignment submission will determine any point reductions for unexcused late submitted work.

If you wish to discuss your grade for any lab or project assignment, print a copy of the graded assignment (including comments from the grader) and see me during normal office hours no later than one week after the assignment has been returned to you.   I will not review any lab or project assignments beyond the one week time limit.

Grading: Your final grade will be computed as follows:

                        28%    Weekly labs

                        49%    Weekly projects

                        20%    Quizzes

                          3%    Class attendance

Your final grade will be based on the percentage of your points divided by the total points available and will then be converted to a letter grade according to the following scale:

96 – 100%      A                     84 – 86%        B-                    72 – 74%        D+

93 – 95%        A-                    81 – 83%        C+                   69 – 71%        D

90 – 92%        B+                   78 – 80%        C                     65 – 68%        D-

87 – 89%        B                     75 – 77%        C-                    Below 65         F

Late Work:

I will clearly indicate a due date for all assignments. Anything submitted up to one week after that date is late, unless you have made prior arrangements with me. For each late assignment, I will deduct 5% for each day that you are late. I will generally not accept assignments more than one week late.  Please talk to me ahead of time if you anticipate an exceptional circumstance, and we will work out a plan. Do not wait until the last week of class to negotiate a solution for late work.

Attendance:

Attendance at the lecture and first lab session of each week is expected; attendance at the second lab session is optional if your work for the week is completed. You are encouraged to keep up with the weekly assignments; it is difficult to catch up once you fall behind. Manage your use of time; completing your work during the assigned lab time is an excellent way to keep up with your work and not fall behind.

Disabilities:

Calvin will make reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities. Students with disabilities should notify the Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities, located in the Student Academic Services office, HH 455, and they should notify their instructors within the first two weeks of class.

Incompletes:

I will give an incomplete grade (I) only in unusual circumstances, and only if those circumstances have been confirmed by the Student Life office. Procrastination does not qualify as an unusual circumstance.

Working Together:

On the lab exercises, I encourage you to talk together and help each other. This can make the labs more interesting and can help you understand the material more fully. However, you still need to do your own work and submit separate assignments.

The projects and quizzes must be done individually without consulting others, and your solutions must be your own.
