Week 1: Introduction
Start! We still won’t have practices or quizzes this week — too early. Instead, we’ll spend time setting up our workflow.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this week, students will be able to:
- Have an idea of what machine learning is and how we are studying this in this course
- Set up and start using the tools for the course
- Remember some core Python programming concepts (lists, tuples, dicts, NumPy arrays)
- 02A — Manipulate the structure and contents of pandas DataFrames by accessing, adding, and deleting rows and columns
- 02B — Sort, filter, and query DataFrames to find and highlight specific information
Course Set-Up Checklist
Complete these before or during the first week:
- Read the syllabus — familiarize yourself with the grading system, policies, and schedule. (Syllabus)
- Get the book — Counting: How We Use Numbers to Decide What Matters by Deborah Stone (Liveright, 2020). Used for all 6 Forum assignments.
- Check your grade page — go to the Grades page and enter the Pokémon keyword you received to confirm access.
- Set up your environment — log in to Coder or install Jupyter locally. See Resources for step-by-step instructions.
- Log in to Moodle — find the course page, confirm you can see the first Reading, and complete it before Monday’s deadline.
