Forum Instructions

Six times this semester, class becomes a book club. Each Forum session is built around one chapter of Counting: How We Use Numbers to Decide What Matters by Deborah Stone, connected to whatever machine learning topic we’re covering that week.

This page explains how the in-class activity works and how to submit it. The discussion questions themselves are different every time — find them on that week’s own Forum page, linked in the table below.

How it works

1. You’ll get a paper with that week’s discussion questions printed on it.
2. Annotate it yourself first. Read the questions and write your own thoughts, reactions, and answers directly on your copy — this is your own thinking, before anyone else’s.
3. Compare with classmates. At the end of the in-class discussion, talk with other students about their answers, and add their impressions to your own paper too — in your own words, noting whose idea it was. Your final page should show both your own initial thinking and what you picked up from others.
4. Photograph or scan it and upload it to Moodle. A clear phone photo is fine, as long as your handwriting is legible.
