Work through the following materials this week:

• The Prolog tutorial:

  • Chapter 3 - Recursion

    1. Read Chapter 3, Sections 3.1-2, and work through their examples.
    2. If you have time, do the “Practical Session” in Section 3.4.
    3. We’ll look at some of the exercises in Section 3.3 during lab.

  • Chapter 4 - Lists

    1. Read Chapter 4, Sections 4.1-3, and work through their examples.
    2. If you have time, do the “Practical Session” in Section 4.5.
    3. We’ll look at some of the exercises in Section 4.4 during lab.

  • Chapter 5 - Arithmetic

    1. Read Chapter 5, Sections 5.1-4, and work through their examples.
    2. If there is time, do the “Practical Session” in Section 5.6.
    3. We’ll look at some of the exercises in Section 5.5 during lab.

  You will work with Prolog in the lab, so have this done by lab day.

• Attend to the following sections of Chapters 9-10:

  • Sections 9.1-9.3 & 9.4-9.5 - Familiarize yourself with basic inference in first-order logic, particularly with unification (Sections 9.2.1-9.2.2), the logical foundations of Prolog (Section 9.4.2) and resolution (Sections 9.5.1-9.5.3).
  • Sections 10.1-10.2 - Familiarize yourself with the basics of classical planning.

  As with last week, this unit covers a considerable amount of material from the text. Focus on the discussions and examples from class and on logic programming in Prolog.
