Assignment ¶
Read D. Schuurman’s Technology and the Biblical Story, focusing on the introduction and the “Technology has a Bias” section (pages 4–5).
Post a statement to Forum 2 Initial Posts on Moodle. The statement should be one or two paragraphs, written in clear academic style. It should:
- Explain what Schuurman means when he says that technology is value-laden
- Indicate whether or not you agree with him. (Note that thoughtful disagreement is more valuable than thoughtless agreement.)
- Include one concrete example, not taken from the reading, that illustrates your position.
Grading ¶
This and all future discussion posts will be graded by whether other students find your post valuable. Here’s how that will be measured: Each topic will actually have two forums: one for initial posts, the other for revised posts.
Initial Posts ¶
Initial posts will not be graded, but should express your thoughtful position clearly enough that other students can cite it. By the end of the semester, you should be cited by several other people (exact numbers will vary year to year depending on the number of students in the class).
Revised Posts ¶
In the forum named Forum 2 Revised Posts, post a revised statement. The revised statement should (10 points total):
- Clearly explains the issue or point raised by the reading (2 points)
- Clearly describes the author’s position on the issue (2 points)
- Gives a concrete example (not taken from the reading) to illustrate the position (2 points)
- Meaningfully cites two other students:
- Someone reading only this post would have a good guess about what the other students said (2 points)
- Something unique is said about each student’s point, not “J and K both said” (1 point)
- At least one of those cited must be someone you haven’t cited before (1 point)
If al element is unclear (due to poor writing style or other factors), one point will be deducted from that element.
No late posts will be accepted without communicating your situation with the professor.
