How Do I Find Information About My Topic? Serendipity

Occasionally, a systematic search process does not work as well as simply browsing. You would be surprised to learn how much information you find through serendipity ("luck" or accident). Browsing is best employed after you know a little bit about your subject. Obviously, this is not the preferred research method, but be prepared to use it at times.

  • Browse the titles on either side of a useful book on the library shelves.
  • Enter a very broad search term into an article database and scan the first one hundred titles that are retrieved.
  • Approach your topic from a slightly different angle.
