The Goal of this Web book

To a considerable extent, the goal of this Web book can be considered to be the cultivation of the second two forms of knowledge defined by the National Research Council's Computer Science and Telecommunications Board: concepts and intellectual capabilities, the two types of knowledge that turn "computer literacy" into "information technology fluency."

To put it more specifically, this Web book aims to promote the following:

  1. a genuine understanding of how computers and computer networks really operate, beyond and beneath the often illusory interfaces we use to interact with them;
  2. the ability to undertake well-founded considerations of both the problems and the possibilities of information technology;
  3. a solid understanding of what constitutes college-level research in this era of digital information technologies.
