Calvin College CS-MFT Results

Like most schools with an ABET-accredited CS program, we have our CS seniors take the Educational Testing Service‘s Computer Science Major Field Test (ETS CS-MFT) each year. This standardized test evaluates a student’s knowledge in three broad areas: computer programming, discrete structures, and systems. The maximum possible score on the test is 200 points.

The following table presents the maximum, minimum, and median actual scores for all Calvin senior CS majors (not just those from our ABET-accredited BCS program) on the ETS CS-MFT since 2007:

Calvin Maximum Calvin Minimum Calvin Median
  Score   Percentile1 Score   Percentile1 Score   Percentile1 Percentile2
2014 178 TBD 154 TBD 170 TBD TBD
2013 187 98 141 30 157 65 80
2012 192 99 152 57 173 91 99
2011 197 99.9 140 29 175 92 96+
2010 196 99.9 152 55 176 92 96+
2009 196 99.9 154 61 170 87 95+
2008 186 97 140 29 174 91 96+
2007 200 99.99 156 69 170 87 95+

Note that in many years, our minimum score is above the 50th percentile. In the years when this happens, all of our CS seniors are above average!

Given how few of our students receive any exposure to computer science in high school, we think this is a good indicator of quality of Calvin’s CS department.
