Course Description: (3). F. This course prepares students to set up and administer database servers and clients on a network. Topics include an introduction to database design; SQL programming; principles for interfacing with a database server using the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment (C#, ADO.Net and ASP.NET); issues in data management integrity and security; legal and ethical issues. Prerequisite: 141, 271 or permission of the instructor.

Course Goals and Approach:  The expected outcomes for the course are as follows:

• Understand the business expectations of database technology.
• Understand concepts of relational database design to include functional dependencies and rules of normalization
• Understand how to translate requirements and business rules into a data model
• Become proficient in the use of ANSI SQL and its use in Transact-SQL
• Become proficient in server side programming to include stored procedures, triggers and transaction processing
• Understand the trends in data mining and cloud computing
• Understand the types of indexing options and their performance impact
• Gain experience in integrating database connectivity into applications
• Understand basic database administration and security support through SQL (e.g. GRANT, DENY ) and tools (e.g. SQL Server Management Studio)
