CPSC-101: Computing Concepts Fall, 2001, 1st session

Course Objectives:   This course gives a gentle introduction to computers and computing. Our primary goals will be to learn what a computer really is, how it works, and how to interact confidently with one. To achieve these goals, we'll study:

• the key concepts that have shaped the history of computer development;
• the internal hardware of the computer;
• the system and application software that drive the computer, focussing particularly on operating systems and word processing;
• the fundamental capabilities and limitations of the computer;
• the impact of computing on society and the challenges that face us as computer users and policy makers.

Note: This course is similar enough to the new RIT course that it might not make sense to take them both. Take RIT if you are coming in under the new core - take CPSC-101 if you are finishing up a degree under the old core.
