ScreamerNet Steps

Newtek’s network render software, ScreamerNet, works in one of a couple of different ways. You can set it up yourself in other labs or your friends' computers following the instructions in the PDF manual. It is already set up for use in the the ulab (SB372).

To use ScreamerNet in the ulab:

First, set up as many computers as possible as render nodes. To set up each computer,

• Log in as “guest2” with password bluestone
• If not already done, map \\Holl\w60 to the S: drive (ask Gary for help if necessary). Use login root, password bluestone.
• Open S:\Startup Scripts and double-click on two of them. If the computer has a tag that says “ScreamerNet nodes 20 and 21”, for example, you should run the startup scripts for nodes 20 and 21

Now to set up your render:

• If necessary, map the S: drive on your computer to \\Holl\w60
• Copy your scene, object, image files into the appropriate directories of S:\Content
• Open the scene file from the S:\Content directory. Make sure it can find all the objects and other components.
• Open the Render | Render Globals window and click the Output tab. Activate Save RGB and set the save filename to S:\Content\Render\[yourscenename]. Set the save file type to LW_PNG24. Set the desired starting and ending frames for your render. Save your scene to get your preferences into the scene file.

Now initiate the render.

• Go to Stallman, the computer in the front of the lab. Make sure it is logged in as user "guest2". Start Layout.
• Select Render | Network Render.
• Click Screamer Init.
• Click Clear List and Add Scene to List. Add your scene.
• Click Screamer Render. Watch your job get done up to 74 times faster!

Notes

-          Even if you are using a computer, if you only need one of the cores, you could consider running one ScreamerNet node on it.

-          If you are done using a computer, log out, log back in as “guest2”, and start the appropriate ScreamerNet nodes.

Please cooperate in sharing the render farm – render one scene, and give everyone else a chance to render a scene before you do your next one.
